150 years have passed since John Milne laid the foundations of modern seismology in Japan. How have earthquake observation and research advanced, and what have we learned? Tracing earthquake research from its early days to the present, this talk explores the challenges that remain in predicting earthquakes and reducing their impacts, as well as the efforts of researchers working to address them.
