Public Discussion “Play IMT – On the Possibilities of Theatrical Creation Within the Intermediatheque”

2014.11.07
ACADEMIA

The University Museum, the University of Tokyo and SEAMI have started collaborating on a theatrical project staged at the JP Tower Museum INTERMEDIATHEQUE. This project is an experiment on theatrical creation within a museum space. While pursuing new possibilities for creative activities in relation to the scientific specimens and museum space proper to the Intermediatheque, we will attempt to give birth to new forms of theatrical expression. In this context, and in order to build up the process of theatrical creation in a public form, we will regularly hold related events at the Intermediatheque.
We will begin this series of events with the present public discussion, reuniting project members starting with Kim Seil, the Korean-born leader of SEAMI who actively works in Japan as an actor/stage director/technical trainer, and professor Yoshiaki Nishino, director both of the University Museum, the University of Tokyo, and of the Intermediatheque. We will openly discuss the project, from its beginnings to its future developments. By organically integrating from the very beginning the Intermediatheque collection and activities, as well as the people who come here, into the theatrical creation process, what kind of theatrical expression can be crystalized within a museum space? With all the meanings of the word “play” as our keyword, we will discuss from various viewpoints on the theatrical possibilities of the Intermediatheque space, and reflect upon the future perspectives of this project.
