Notice on the IMT Special Talk Event “Marine Organisms – Tara Expeditions and the Marvelous World of Planktons”

2014-08-21

On September 19th, the JP Tower Museum INTERMEDIATHEQUE will be hosting the special talk event “Marine Organisms – Tara Expeditions and the Marvelous World of Planktons.” The talk will be held by Romain Troublé (Secretary General of Tara Expeditions) and Christan Sardet (Research Director at the French CNRS, a specialist of planktons who has also been aboard the Tara schooner as a researcher), and it will be moderated by Takenori Sasaki (Associate Professor at the University Museum, the University of Tokyo in Taxonomy and Paleontology).
Over the years, Tara has been performing diversified research with the aim to study and understand the ecological threats confronting the oceans and the impacts of climate change. With the collaboration of several prestigious scientific laboratories and institutions, scientists and researchers on board, Tara has conducted 3 major projects: “Tara Arctic Expedition” (2006-2008), “Tara Oceans Expedition” (2009-2012) and “Tara Oceans Polar Circle Expedition” (2013). It is currently out in the Mediterranean Sea since April 2014 for further research. In 2012, when the ship was docked at the North Cove Marina Bay in New York, it welcomed Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations on board. There, the Tara team was invited by Mr. Ban to host a special program at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, the United Nations Rio+20 Conference held in June that year. In 2016 and 2017, Tara will conduct a special mission in the Asian and Asia-Pacific seas to study its corals and will stop over in several ports of Japan. agnès b. has been supporting the “Tara Expeditions” and its marine investigation project since 2003.
Before Tara’s arrival in Japan, this special talk co-organized by the University Museum, the University of Tokyo and agnès b. will provide a unique opportunity to learn more about the unfamiliar world of planktons, its ecology and how it affects our global environment, in the light of the research conducted by the “Tara Oceans Expedition.”
On this occasion, we will hold a press conference as follows.
