A perennial herb, it occurs in alpine regions of the Himalayas. It grows more than 1.5 m tall above the ground and nearly 1 m across at the ground, contrasting with many dwarf plants surrounding it. It has green leaves on the lower part of the stem near the ground, and creamy white, semitransparent ones (bracts) on its upper part.
