There are flowers of various colors blooming in alpine Himalayas. With long winters and short summers, rain almost everyday during blooming, and strong ultraviolet rays on sunny days the alpine regions in the Himalayas are a severe environment for plants. Against this severe environment, the Himalayan plants show elegant beauty for growing, blooming, and fruiting. Since the 1960s, the University of Tokyo has been sending many botanical expedition teams to the Himalayas to clarify the diversity of plants in this region. As a result, we have acquired a wide knowledge of the Himalayan plants, and numerous specimens, which are the basis for research, have been accumulated.
