The Namio Egami Collection

概要

Namio Egami (1906–2002), who was professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, is best known among the public for his influential theory regarding the formation of the ancient State in Japan. However, his interests were wide-ranging and his important contributions to the study of history and archaeology over a period of 70 years were not restricted to Japan, and extended to nearly all parts of the Eurasian continent. Being an authority on human science pertaining to Eurasia, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1991. Not only was he a great researcher, but he was also a matchless collector of archaeological, historical and artistic objects. On repeated occasions of fieldwork during his long academic career, including extensive archaeological excavations in Iraq and Iran in the 1950-1960s, he eventually constituted an enormous antique collection. The specimens on display are part of this collection, which serves as an invaluable teaching-research material for the history of ancient Eurasia.
