Miyake Family Collection from the End of the Edo Period

概要

Former collection of the Miyake family, a famous family of doctors around the central figure of Hiizu Miyake (1848-1938). Hiizu Miyake was the first Doctor in Medical Science in Japan, and served successively as a professor of Medicine at the University of Tokyo, dean of the same faculty, honorary professor and member of the House of Peers. In 1863 and until the following year, he participated to the Tokugawa shogunate’s Embassy to Europe as its youngest attendant. Numerous medical instruments and scientific specimens he bought then remain to us. He continued to acquire numerous foreign products upon his travels overseas.
