Mineral Sample Specimen Collection from Europe

(a) / Date unknown / In wooden box / Formerly a collection of the Medical Library, The University of Tokyo / UMUT Miyake collection

概要

About these specimens collected by Hiizu Miyake’s father, Gonsai (1817-1868), an attached note mentions: “These were once passed on to Siebold, but they were later returned to our country.” Upon Siebold’s second visit to Japan, Gonsai asked h(IMTo identify the minerals he had collected. However, once in Europe, Siebold did not comply with Gonsai’s demand to return them. It is Hiizu who, on his father’s demand, met Siebold during his stay in Europe, and brought back these specimens to Japan. However, these being mainly minerals from Bohemia, they are thought to be specimens received in replacement of those originally collected by Gonsai, which are now lost.
