Gakutaro Osawa (1863-1920) was born in Tsushima (Owari Province). After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo in 1887, he went to Germany in 1894 to study, learning comparative anatomy. He was appointed Professor of Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine in 1900. Having passed away during his tenure, he donated his body to make a skeletal specimen.
