Horus Statue

Date unknown / Bronze / Department of Pharmaceutical Science, UMUT

概要

Horus is the god of the sky and the sun in ancient Egypt. He is usually depicted as a bird of prey, and this sculpture is a falcon. Horus’s right eye represents the sun and the left one the moon. It is said that the shape of the left eye looks like the letters of alphabet, “Rx”, and this mark has been used as a sign in prescriptions. From this, it can be considered that this sculpture had decorated the buildings of the Faculty of Pharmacology in the University of Tokyo as a motif deeply associated with pharmacology.
