The discovery of special tombs associated with gold ornaments in Kuntur Wasi site, Peru

概要

Kuntur Wasi is located in the northern Peru. This site functioned as a ceremonial center during the late Initial Period and the Early Horizon (ca. 1000-250 B.C.). The Archaeological Mission of the University of Tokyo launched excavations at this site in 1988. In 1989 and 1990 field seasons, four tombs were discovered in association with many gold ornaments as offerings. They are the oldest gold artifacts that were metallurgically refined in the Americas. The pieces exhibited here are the replicas of the gold artifacts from three tombs and made of the alloy of the same material composition as their originals.
